Where wedding shopping happens in Mumbai

Mumbai's wedding shopping is spread across very different pockets of the city. Knowing which area suits which purchase is what keeps a shopping day from turning into three.

Dadar (Hindmata and the saree lanes)

    Useful for:
Handwoven Paithani sarees and traditional Maharashtrian wedding wear.
    Worth it if:
Brides and mothers looking for a traditional saree as a central outfit.
    Typical purchase:
Main ceremony saree, family sarees, blouse fabric.
    Keep in mind:
Ready-stock Paithani can be bought and worn as it is; a piece woven to order runs on the weaver's timeline, so decide early which of the two you want.

Bandra and Khar (Linking Road side)

    Useful for:
Designer boutiques alongside high-street stores in the same stretch.
    Worth it if:
Couples who want contemporary or fusion looks, and bridesmaids or siblings shopping on a tighter timeline.
    Typical purchase:
Sangeet and cocktail outfits, reception looks, pre-wedding shoot wardrobe.
    Keep in mind:
Some designer boutiques work by appointment, so checking before you travel can save time.

    Santacruz and the western suburbs

    Useful for:
Studios, tailors and mid-size stores that are easier to reach from the suburbs than South Mumbai.
    Worth it if:
Families living in the western suburbs who want to avoid crossing the city repeatedly.
    Typical purchase:
Groom wear, family outfits, alterations and repeat fittings.
    Keep in mind:
Useful when fittings need several visits — proximity matters more than variety at that stage.

    Crawford Market and Mangaldas Market

    Useful for:
Fabric, lace, trims and wedding accessories in adjoining lanes near CST.
    Worth it if:
Anyone getting outfits stitched rather than buying ready-to-wear.
    Typical purchase:
Raw silk, embroidered dupattas, blouse and sherwani fabric.
    Keep in mind:
This is a walking, bargaining market — comfortable shoes, a morning slot and a clear list make a real difference.

    Zaveri Bazaar (South Mumbai)

    Useful for:
A long-established jewellery district, from Kundan sets to contemporary diamond pieces.
    Worth it if:
Families buying bridal jewellery or matching sets for several members.
    Typical purchase:
Bridal jewellery, family jewellery, matching pieces for specific outfits.
    Keep in mind:
Jewellery is easier to decide once the outfits are shortlisted, so it usually belongs later in the sequence.

Colaba Causeway and South Mumbai boutiques

    Useful for:
A mix of boutiques and bespoke tailoring in one walkable stretch.
    Worth it if:
Couples already shopping in South Mumbai, or grooms combining stops with Zaveri Bazaar.
    Typical purchase:
Groom wear, accessories, occasion outfits for smaller functions.
    Keep in mind:
Pairing this with Zaveri Bazaar in one day usually works better than pairing it with a suburban trip.

How we plan a Mumbai wedding shopping day

In Mumbai, the constraint is rarely choice — it is geography, traffic, appointment timings, fittings and the number of people who need to agree. A day that jumps between South Mumbai and the suburbs often ends with one purchase and a lot of travel. We plan around that, though every wedding sequences differently.

    1. 1Understand what is still needed, function by function.
    2. 2Shortlist the areas and stores that actually fit those gaps.
    3. 3Group the stops geographically so a day stays in one part of the city.
    4. 4Plan fittings and follow-ups with enough buffer before the wedding dates.

    What you walk away with

    • Clear wedding shopping priorities
    • Function-by-function outfit direction
    • A shortlist of stores and areas worth your time
    • Better-organised shopping days
    • Outfit coordination guidance across the family
    • A fitting and follow-up plan where relevant
    • More confidence in the final choices

    In their own words

What clients said about shopping with a stylist

Both clients describe the part of the work this page is about: several outfits needed quickly, and shopping finished in far less time than expected. Their words are unedited.

5 outfits needed in 48 hours. Shopping completed in one day.

It was great. We all had five outfits that we needed to get in about forty-eight hours, and we got all of our shopping done in one day because StyleBuddy took us exactly where we needed to go to get it all done fast.

Everything found in the first store, far quicker than expected.

We had a great experience at Mohey and had really incredible help from the team. They were instrumental in helping us find just what we needed, and I can't thank them enough for their patience with our very specific choices and needs. They helped us get exactly what we wanted — fulfilled the vision we had in much quicker time than we ever anticipated. We thought the process would take at least a week and that we would have to go to many different places, but this was the first place we came to and we found everything we needed. We are very particular and had an unusual sense of what we wanted, and everyone helped us fulfil our specific needs. We are very happy with the end result.

Practical things worth knowing about shopping in Mumbai

Open whichever of these is relevant to your wedding.

    Geography and travel time

Mumbai's wedding shopping sits in pockets that are far apart in travel time even when they look close on a map. Zaveri Bazaar and Crawford Market are South Mumbai; Dadar sits in between; Bandra, Khar and Santacruz are the western suburbs; Thane and Navi Mumbai are separate trips again.

Combining two distant pockets in one day usually means most of the day is spent travelling. It is generally more productive to keep each shopping day inside one area and to finish the decisions there rather than leaving them half-open.

    Weather, humidity and the monsoon

Mumbai is humid for much of the year, and the monsoon roughly spans June to August. Heavy velvet and dense brocade are uncomfortable in that weather and can look tired by the end of a long function.

Lighter silks, georgette, organza and crepe usually carry better, especially for daytime and outdoor functions. Venue matters as much as season — a beach or rooftop function and an air-conditioned banquet hall suit quite different fabric weights.

    Fittings and tailoring time

Wedding outfits often need one or more fitting rounds, particularly tailored blouses, sherwanis and made-to-measure pieces. Each round means another trip, and tailors are busiest through the busy November-to-February wedding season.

We plan fittings with buffer time before the wedding dates, and where possible cluster them near where you live so repeat visits are short. Ready-stock pieces can be bought and worn as they are; anything woven or made to order, such as a commissioned handloom Paithani, needs its full production time and cannot be compressed at the end.

When several family members are shopping

Family shopping is where Mumbai weddings usually lose days. Parents, siblings and close relatives each need outfits across several functions, availability rarely overlaps, and opinions multiply in a store.

It works better to decide the palette and formality per function first, then shop in small groups against that plan. Our family wedding styling support exists for exactly this.

    Different communities, different wedding formats

Mumbai hosts Maharashtrian, Gujarati, Parsi, Christian, South Indian and North Indian weddings side by side, and many households combine more than one set of customs. That means dress codes, colours and the number of functions vary considerably from one wedding to the next.

We take our direction from your family rather than assuming a template. Where a specific ritual has a particular expectation for what is worn, we plan around what your family tells us, not a generalisation. Our cultural wedding styling page covers this in more detail.

What Affects Wedding Outfit Costs in Mumbai

Outfit costs in Mumbai vary widely with fabric, the amount of hand work, whether a piece is ready-to-wear or made to order, and whether you are buying from a market, a multi-brand store or a designer studio. Handloom and hand-embroidered pieces sit at the higher end because of the labour involved; ready-to-wear and market purchases sit lower.

We do not publish figures for these, because prices move and vary too much by store to be responsible as a guide. What we do is help you decide where each function's outfit is worth spending on and where it is not, so the overall wardrobe holds together.

    Mumbai wedding styling FAQs

What does a StyleBuddy wedding stylist in Mumbai help with?

A StyleBuddy wedding stylist in Mumbai helps brides, grooms and families plan outfits across every function, shortlist suitable stores and shopping districts, coordinate bridal, groom and family looks, organise fittings and structure shopping days. The plan accounts for the travel between South Mumbai, Dadar and the western suburbs.

Can you help both the bride and the groom?

Yes. Many weddings we work on involve the bride and groom together, and the outfits are planned so the two of you look coordinated rather than separately styled across the same functions.

Can StyleBuddy help our family shop together?

Yes. Family shopping is usually where days get lost, because parents, siblings and close relatives all need outfits for different functions. We plan who needs what, group the shopping sensibly and keep the colours and formality consistent across the family.

I live outside India. Can the shopping be planned before I arrive in Mumbai?

Yes. We can plan the looks and shortlist stores remotely so that your days in Mumbai are used for trials, decisions and fittings rather than discovery. Our NRI wedding shopping service is built around short trips like these.

Do you accompany clients to stores?

Yes, where you want that. Some clients only need the plan and the shortlist; others want a stylist alongside them in stores on shopping days. We agree which of the two suits your wedding before we begin.

Can you help with several wedding functions?

Yes. Mumbai weddings often run across an engagement, haldi, mehendi, sangeet, the wedding and a reception. We plan the wardrobe function by function so outfits are not repeated awkwardly and each look suits the venue and time of day.

How early should I begin wedding shopping in Mumbai?

Four to six months ahead is comfortable for most weddings, and earlier if you are commissioning a handloom Paithani or heavily worked outfits that need stitching time. The busy November-to-February wedding season fills up in Mumbai, so appointments and tailoring slots go faster then.

How is the level of support decided?

After we understand your wedding. We look at the functions, who needs help, how much is already bought and how much time you have in Mumbai, then recommend the combination of planning, shopping and styling support that fits. The StyleBuddy team discusses the specifics with you directly.
