Planning a wedding wardrobe from another country isn't a smaller version of local shopping - it's a different logistics problem. You're working across time zones, you can't touch fabric until you land, and the number of shopping days you actually have in India is usually fixed and non-negotiable because flights, leave and other wedding events eat into it.

The fix isn't trying to shop faster once you land. It's moving everything that doesn't require physical presence - the brief, the measurements, the shortlisting - to before you land, so the trip itself is used only for what genuinely needs you in the room: touching fabric, checking fit, and collecting alterations.

Consultation calls are scheduled around your time zone, not ours - whichever part of the day overlaps comfortably with evening or late-morning hours in India. The same applies to live video shopping sessions for markets and stores that don't have an online catalogue: the call is fit to your slot rather than yours to ours.

The steps themselves - brief, measurements, remote shortlisting, India trip, shipping - stay the same regardless of which country you're calling from. Only the timing of each call shifts to suit you.

Before landing, lock in: the style brief, verified measurements, and a shortlist of outfits per person with appointments already booked. These don't need you in the room and are the decisions most likely to run over time if left for the trip itself.

Leave for the trip: touching and comparing fabric in person (especially for heavier or textured fabrics that don't photograph accurately), final fitting adjustments, accessory pairing, and anything genuinely last-minute. Trying to lock these in early usually means redoing them once the main outfits are finished.

Measurements taken by someone unfamiliar with garment construction are a common cause of alteration delays once you're in India. We send a measurement guide with a short video showing exactly where each measurement is taken - bust, waist, hip, shoulder, sleeve length, blouse length - and ask for a photo of the measuring tape in position at a few key points as a sanity check.

If numbers look inconsistent with body type or previous outfits, we flag it before any cutting starts, not after you've landed and a first fitting reveals the error.

Where you shop usually comes down to where the wedding is happening and where you already have appointments or family based. A city with a strong concentration of the designers or tailors you've shortlisted remotely is worth the trip even if it isn't the wedding city itself - as long as travel and shipping time back are factored in.

If shopping is split across more than one city, sequence appointments by neighbourhood within each city first, then plan the city-to-city leg around whichever outfits have the longest alteration lead time.

When multiple family members are shopping in the same window, sequencing matters more than speed. Outfits with the longest alteration lead time - heavily embroidered lehengas, structured sherwanis - should go first so there's slack for a second fitting. Parents' and simpler outfits can follow once the tailor's queue has room.

Trying to shop for everyone on day one usually means the person with the most complex outfit ends up rushed toward the end of the trip, which is exactly when there's no time left to fix anything.

If parents or other family are already in India, they can attend fittings and appointments in person while you join the same calls remotely or review photos and video afterward. Keeping one shared brief - rather than separate conversations with each family member - is what keeps everyone's outfits coordinated even though you're not shopping together in the same room.

Family members who won't be travelling to India at all can still be styled through remote measurements and photo-based fittings coordinated with a local tailor, or by having finished outfits shipped to them once approved over video.

Plan on at least one fitting-alter-refit cycle once outfits are in progress; heavily embellished pieces or last-minute silhouette changes need more time, not less. This is why a buffer day - one not pre-booked with anything else - is built into the itinerary specifically for alteration collection and a second fitting.

Blouses, waistbands and sherwani sleeves are the most common places that need a second round, so it helps to get these fitted early in the trip rather than on the last day.

Not every outfit needs to be hand-carried. Once alterations are finalised, remaining pieces are packed with garment-safe materials and shipped, with transit buffer built in ahead of the wedding date. A courier experienced with delicate wedding wear and the documentation your shipment requires are arranged as part of this step.

Consider a couple with a handful of days in India before the wedding, needing outfits for the couple, both sets of parents, and siblings. Spread out with no pre-work, this can realistically take weeks. Sequenced properly, it looks like this:

• Before landing: style brief finalised over video call; measurements for everyone collected and verified; outfit shortlists approved by photo/video; designer and tailor appointments booked in sequence by neighbourhood.
• Early days: first fittings for the couple's main outfits (the ones needing the most alteration time), plus finalising parents' outfits since these usually need the least adjustment.
• Middle days: sibling outfits and accessories - jewellery, footwear, dupatta pins - decided against the already-fitted main outfits, not in isolation.
• Buffer day: alteration collection and a second fitting for anything that didn't sit right earlier; this day should not be pre-booked with anything else.
• Final day: last-minute swaps, final checks, and packing or shipping arrangements for anyone not hand-carrying outfits home.

After you're back overseas, follow-up continues over WhatsApp - accessory pairing questions, draping guidance for the day of the wedding, and coordinating any repair needed before the event. Shipped outfits are tracked until they arrive, and any last fit issue found after unpacking is worked through remotely with your tailor in India.
