Coordination
We coordinate, not match: a shared colour family or a metal-tone echo between the groom's stole and the bride's jewellery reads as intentional in photographs. The bride's palette is confirmed for each function before the groom's outfit for that event is finalised, since palettes often shift between haldi, sangeet, ceremony and reception.

Fabric weight has to match the venue and season, not just the visual impression you want. Velvet, brocade and heavy wool-blend suiting hold structure and look rich under indoor or evening lighting but are uncomfortable in humid outdoor weddings.
Raw silk, silk-cotton blends, linen and lighter jacquards give a similar formal presence with much better breathability - the better call for daytime or outdoor functions and destination weddings in warm climates. Lining matters as much as the outer fabric: a heavy outer layer with a breathable lining is more wearable through a multi-hour ceremony than a lighter fabric with heavy interlining.
Custom sherwanis and bandhgalas with embroidery or embellishment typically need 8-12 weeks of lead time once fabric and design are finalised, plus at least two fittings - an initial fit check and a final fitting closer to the date for adjustments.
Off-the-rack suits or kurta sets with only minor alterations can usually be ready within 1-3 weeks. Build your shopping and fitting schedule backward from the wedding date, starting with the outfit that has the longest lead time (usually the ceremony sherwani) and working forward to faster, less-customised pieces like the mehendi kurta.
At every fitting past the first, bring the footwear, inner kurta or shirt, and any collar-adjacent accessories you plan to wear, so the tailor can check the complete look rather than the jacket alone.
Footwear should be chosen with the outfit, not after it. Mojaris or juttis - traditional leather or fabric shoes, often with an upturned or pointed toe - pair naturally with a sherwani, bandhgala or kurta set and suit the silhouette's traditional lines.
Oxfords or brogues suit a Western suit or tuxedo and read as more formal in that context. Bring the actual pair to your fitting, since trouser or churidar length is set against the shoe you'll wear, not a generic pair.
A safa or pagdi is often the most visually significant accessory for a sherwani look and is frequently regional in style - a Rajasthani safa with elaborate pleating, a Sikh dastar, a Marathi pheta - each with a different draping technique and fabric weight.
Turban colour and fabric should be decided alongside the sherwani since the combination is part of the overall look. Where a professional turban draper is involved, build that timing into your getting-ready schedule, since draping can take time and neck and shoulder posture under a turban can change how a sherwani collar sits.
A brooch or kalgi adds a focal point to the turban or lapel. A stole draped over one shoulder works with a sherwani for the ceremony. For a suit or bandhgala, a pocket square, cufflinks and a well-chosen watch are usually enough.
Resist adding too many accessories to one outfit - two or three deliberate pieces photograph better than a crowded look.
Hair and beard styling should be settled at the same time as the outfit, not on the morning of the wedding - a beard shape or hairstyle that works with a bare face doesn't always sit well under a heavy turban or a high sherwani collar.
If you're changing your hairstyle or growing/trimming a beard for the wedding, do a trial at least 2-3 weeks out so there's time to adjust, and photograph it against the actual outfit colour, not just in isolation.
Once the groom's and bride's palettes are set, family members - parents, siblings, close relatives attending on stage or in key photographs - can be coordinated into a shared colour family without matching exactly.
This is best planned after both the bride's and groom's outfits are finalised, so family styling complements rather than competes with either.
A practical shopping sequence: settle on the silhouette and fabric direction for the ceremony outfit first since it has the longest lead time, then work through sangeet, reception and daytime pieces.
